For a little clarification, here is Bobby Bless’ synopsis from his review: “Since a majority of the public… well, those in America… don’t really know who Astro Boy is, you should know that this movie is an origin story. Got it? Good. Moving on… In the floating city known as Metro City, robots, created by Doctor Tenma (Nicolas Cage) and Doctor Elefun (Bill Nighy), do everything that humans don’t want to do. One day, Tenma sets up a demonstration for the President of Metro City, President Stone (Donald Sutherland), to see a massive robot dubbed the Peacekeeper. The Peacekeeper can either be powered by a blue energy source of pure positive energy or a red energy source of pure negative energy. Since Stone doesn’t want to be perceived as a weak leader, he forces the scientists to use the red energy source. This, of course, was a bad idea as the robot goes ape shit and attempts to kill everyone in the room. Acting quickly, Tenma activates a shield that prevents the robot from getting any closer. But, unbeknownst to Tenma, his son Toby (Freddie Highmore), who shouldn’t have been there in the first place, is trapped on the other side of the shield. At this point, all you need to know is that they pull a “Bambi”… and that isn’t the only movie they end up ripping off. Anyway, after the accident, a grieving Tenma decides to build a robot, use a hair from Toby’s baseball cap to harvest DNA and Toby’s memories, install them into the robot and to power it with the blue energy source. Thus, Toby is reborn. However, shortly after activation, Robo-Toby doesn’t live up to Tenma’s expectations and Tenma doesn’t want anything to do with the boy. Because of this, Robo-Toby sets off on an adventure in search of acceptance. There’s more to the story, but I’ve basically told you the first 45 minutes of it already and don’t feel like spoiling it anymore.”
