This realistic film should have been named Full Frontal Nudity with Dripping. The actual title deceives you into believing it is about a story of cozy love between two individuals with their own baggage. The hard truth is that there’s nothing “hard” about Justin Kirk’s full frontal nudity as young Jewish businessman Stuart Sawyer.
Julianne Nicholson’s bush couldn’t get much of a response from anyone because she is pissing, dripping or complaining every time she appears nude. Director Jeff Lipsky had her natural beauty toned down to make her seem more real to the audience. Nicholson does an acceptable, but not overwhelming job of playing the disturbed, Catholic named Nicole Reilly. Nicholson should probably stick to her role as Detective Megan Wheeler in one of those Law and Order shows.
Kirk (of Weeds) carries the early dialogue with his talent for timing and delivery. Director Jeff Lipsky wrote and directed this realistic relationship based on personal experiences. This makes the movie very real and, sometimes, painful. The main characters are constantly “harmed” by their support system of friends and family. Nicole’s mother tells Stuart she believes every stereotype about Jews and applies those stereotypes to him and his family. The maid of honor makes it clear in her speech that she does not support them while Stuart’s mentally unstable brother gives a moving speech in support of the judgmental, Catholic family.
Flannel Pajamas confronts serious issues most couples deal with but drops you two hours in without any conclusion or understanding of what the characters gained from their struggle. Nicholson’s character becomes so unhinged it’s enough to make anyone cheer for their divorce. Kirk’s character becomes the source of pity as he tries to salvage a relationship she had doomed to failure before the wedding cake was digested. Watching this film should be a recommendation by therapists and not a movie critic.
