This review is going to be a little different than my other reviews. Instead of this being a review for a movie, this is going to be a review for a video game based on a franchise; a franchise that has pretty much lain dormant until this game was released. If you are wondering what the franchise is, it’s the Ghostbusters franchise and let me be the first to say that you’re a moron because you already clicked on the review and you should already know what franchise this video game is based on. Truth be told, the only reason this review is going up is because I wanted to see if anyone would actually take notice that this is a review for a video game based on a franchise and not a movie. Technically, the game can be counted as the next installment in the franchise so, just in case, we can count this as a review for what could have been the third film.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game takes place roughly two years after the events in the second film. This time around, the Ghostbusters decide that they need a recruit, a nameless rookie that you get to control, to test out the new equipment that Egon (Harold Ramis) invents for the team. Suddenly, a large PKE shockwave hits the city and releases Slimer. After the obligatory training tutorial, the Ghostbusters and the recruit go to find Slimer at the Sedgewick Hotel (the hotel in the first film). After dealing with the situation over at the Sedgewick, one that has you practically recreate the dining hall scene in the first film and then taking on a large fisherman ghost, the team has to go save the game’s damsel in distress, Dr. Ilyssa Selwyn (Alyssa Milano), a museum curator in charge of the new Gozer exhibit over at the Museum of Natural History, from none other than the fucking Stay Puft Marshmallow Man… how titsy is that? Instead of spoiling the rest of the game for you guys, I will say that after you save Selwyn from Stay Puft, the Ghostbusters have to figure out how Selwyn is connected to the paranormal events that are going on and figure out a way to prevent New York City from being overrun by a bunch of ghostly douche bags.

The game relies a lot on its nostalgia factor, but it works for it since a lot of us went out and got this game solely because of the fact that we grew up loving the films (the second one not as much, but it’s still fine). The controls for the game take some time getting used to, but afterwards you don’t even think about them. The graphics for the game, even though there are some problems with the lip syncing, are top notch. The cut scenes alone are great. Granted they look great because the nostalgia factor is in high gear and you’re sitting there happy as shit… like you’re drinking and catching up with a bunch of your best buds that you haven’t seen in a long time. The best part about the game is that they got a majority of the cast from the films back (the only two not returning being Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver) and the chemistry, even though it’s only voice acting, is still great… like they never skipped a beat.

For me, the game only had one major flaw. That flaw, which is a flaw in practically every game, being that the dialogue in the levels starts to become repetitive. Because of the nostalgia factor it’s still kind of fun that the Ghostbusters are saying these lines to you, but honestly, it gets annoying hearing the same lines being said to you over and over again in a level.

Even with its one flaw, Ghostbusters: The Video Game is actually a good game that’s fun to play. The nostalgia factor alone is going to sucker you in to checking this game out, but it’s definitely worth it.

Final Synopsis: It’s the fucking Ghostbusters and you get to fight Stay Puft, what’s not to like? If you don’t like it, you’re a terrorist.

Points Lost: -1 for the repetitive dialogue that gets annoying after a while.

Lesson Learned: Always test things out on the new guy first.

Burning Question: What did Rick Moranis have going on that prevented him from being in this game?

  1. You forgot -1 for the glitched achivements that prevent The Vocabulariast from 100%-ing the game, so that he can go sell it and buy something else. It’s a good game though and definitely fun. The multiplayer is where it’s at, but the story mode was pretty fun. Also, there should be a -1 for the fucked up save system, which basically erases everything you did in previous playthroughs and forces you to start from scratch. 7/10 from me.
