This year, the summer blockbuster season started early. And boy, did it start with a bang. Iron Man, as of right now, is probably the best comic book movie that we will get this summer (that is until The Dark Knight comes out). One thing for sure is that Iron Man is one of Marvel’s best comic book movies to date.
Iron Man is about Tony Stark, a weapons manufacturer, who gets kidnapped in Afghanistan and is forced into building them some nifty shit. Along the way Tony has a change of heart and decides to build a suit of armor to rid the world of his “evil” weapons of mass destruction.
The movie is a bit slow at first since it is an origin story, but, if you can get past that fact…and the first hour or so of the movie…then it’s an awesome summer movie. It is also marred by some craptastic dialogue at times, but not enough that you can’t let it slide.
As for the acting, Robert Downey Jr. is perfectly casted as the womanizing billionaire Tony Stark. There is just something about his one liners in the movie that make you think that Downey Jr. is actually Stark himself. One of the best parts of the movie has to be when Tony is going to a benefit and a woman asks, “Tony, do you remember me?” and without breaking stride or even glancing at the whore Stark replies, “Not a chance.” It’s moments like that that make one want to be Tony Stark. Terrence Howard plays Tony’s friend Jim Rhodes, who later becomes War Machine, and doesn’t really seem like he has much to do since he doesn’t have the War Machine suit yet. But, he does get to drink up on a plane that comes equipped with a flight crew of strippers and a fantastic hide-away stripper pole that rises from the floor. Gwyneth Paltrow is in the film as Pepper Potts, but all she is there for is to be the cocktease of the film…which she plays well since that’s all she is good for these days. And lastly, we have, Jeff Bridges playing the villain Obadiah Stane (or to the comic book nerds out there, The Iron Monger). Bridges plays this role well and is very un-Dude like (so, if you like The Big Lebowski, you will hate him as this character) which makes him so good at playing Stane.
This of course is Downey’s show and he carries it very well. That plus the graphics and the fact that Marvel shelled (no pun intended) out the money to actually have the suits made for the film make this a kick ass movie.
Overall, Iron Man is a must see for every comic book nerd out there that wants to jizz in their pants at the fact that Marvel actually took the time to put this movie together and make it right.
Final Synopsis: Iron Man is a fun awesome movie that should be seen by all comic book nerds and by most that just want to see an awesome movie. The acting, especially by Downey Jr. and Bridges, makes this movie a must see alone. Check it out and wish you could be as cool as Tony Stark.
Points Lost: -1 for spending too long on the origin. -1 for not having enough vagina thrown at the womanizing Stark.
Lesson Learned: If you’re rich you will never have to worry about getting a sexually transmitted disease.
Burning Question: If you want to be stealthy, why paint you suit Red and Gold?
