Imagine throwing Dark City and Dracula into a blender. The bubbly concoction that would be produced is something close to what Perfect Creature turned out to feel like.

This entire film takes place in an alternate universe/time where vampirism is not only real, but man made through a genetic accident caused by military tampering with biological weaponry (weaponizing diseases). The twist to the story is that Vampires, called Brothers, are at peace with humans and watch over them good naturedly. Their blood is used by the their church to heal and help mankind, and in turn many people offer up their blood as a way to keep the Brothers alive.

The catch is that humanity is overrun by plagues and disease. Humans require regular vaccines and appear to be dying left and right.

Hell breaks loose when a Brother begins feeding on, and subsequently murdering, random humans. War is probable and the Brothers unite with a local police faction to hunt down the rogue Brother. What follows is a stylish and well acted story. If you can handle the kiwi accents that is.

Oddly enough, this film appears to be less about a creative take on vampires and deviation of space and time, and more on drawing a parallel on social dichotomy. I know this because it was blatant. They tell you outright via a dialog with the lead Brother and female detective. The conversation centers around prejudice and draws direct parallel (literally spoken) to sexism in the workplace and racism.

I lost respect for the film because it took this George Romero step to slap you in the face with what they were trying to convey. I found the Director's NEED to force the message on the audience to be very insulting. But not enough to draw too far away from the film. Like Land of the Dead, i was able to continue the film with a little grumbling and rolling of my eyes.

As with nearly every vampire movie, the violence was fairly tame. A spurt or two here and there, but mostly just bloody mouths. One more negative point would be the attempt to use Matrix like special effects. Slow downs, where they don't belong, and obvious speed ups definitely pulled away from the flow of the film. Gotta realize this was probably a lower budget film and take that into consideration when watching.

Overall Impression: In the end, this film turns out to be a moderately entertaining story with a rather unique takes on vampirism and alternate realities. It was not particularly daring, and not exactly memorable. Just entertaining and interesting to watch.

Recommendation: Worth a view if you want something different to watch. Not much a risk with this one. It is interesting and done well enough to warrant seeing.
