Note: Thanks to imdb, this review goes out as a birthday present for a man that many of you know as Red from That’s 70’s show, but to us movie aficionados this man shall always be known as Clarence Boddicker. So, Happy Birthday, Mr. Kurtwood Smith.
I sure do miss the days of the awesome R-rated movies from the 1980’s. As stated in other reviews for movies from that decade, these movies just reeked of total awesomeness. This is probably because these movies were well written movies laced with strong language, drugs, boobies and brutality… Who the fuck am I kidding, those are the reasons why R-rated movies from the 1980’s reeked of awesomeness. Because of these elements, one shouldn’t even be surprised by the sheer awesomeness of RoboCop.
For those of you that don’t know, which would totally shock the shit out of me, RoboCop is one of those dystopian future films set in Detroit, Michigan. With the city financially ruined and violent crimes, especially ones committed against police officers, skyrocketing out of control, the city government contacts O.C.P. to fund the Detroit Police Department. Unfortunately, O.C.P. can give two shits about Old Detroit and would rather build a mega city called Delta City, but there is a problem; to get the Delta City project off the ground, O.C.P. has to come up with a way to prevent crime with a dwindling police department. Their solution to this problem involves a new law enforcement droid dubbed ED-209. Sadly, but awesomely, there is little glitch in the ED-209 prototype they have which forces the company to shelve that idea. Enter Alex J. Murphy (Peter Weller).
Murphy, a newbie to the Detroit police department, and his partner Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen) are in hot pursuit of the villainous, and awesomely played, Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith). The two track Boddicker and his gang down to an abandoned steel mill. While trying to stop these evil men, Murphy gets caught and gets killed in one of the most awesome and most brutal sequences to appear on scene… the scene is so awesome that I can only describe it as Metal… not Slipknot metal… fucking Motörhead metal. Anyway, after the altercation, Murphy gets put into O.C.P.’s “RoboCop” program and becomes the city’s first RoboCop. From there on out, the movie revolves around RoboCop taking out the scum of Old Detroit, remembering who he is and going back to taking out the scum of Old Detroit… oh, and fight an ED-209 along the way.
This movie has everything going for it. The direction by Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers) is expertly done. From a solidly written script, Verhoeven puts together a well balanced film that is gritty looking and fast paced.
The acting is phenomenal. Peter Weller was casted perfectly for the role of Alex J. Murphy/ RoboCop. When he is Murphy, you root for him and are kind of sad that he gets offed in the film, but once he becomes RoboCop, the man ups the ante by giving a badass character who, by the end of the film, becomes humanized again… to the point that you forget he’s a robot. Ronny Cox is great as the scumbag Senior VP of O.C.P. Dick Jones and Miguel Ferrer gives a quality, though short, performance as Bob Morton, the man who proposes the “RoboCop” initiative. Ah, but the true star of this film is Kurtwood Smith. Smith, as Boddicker, is truly classic in this film. His performance is so awesome, and so different than other roles of his, that one almost wishes that they could be him.
The special effects are another high point for this movie. Yeah, there are some people out there that would say that RoboCop’s special effects look like shit, but those people are idiots who have been spoiled by today’s glamorous CGI effects. Those types of people just catch grasp the beauty and hard work that goes into practical effects like matte paintings or stop motion.
My only qualm with this movie is that they seem to build up to an awesome fight between ED-209 and RoboCop. The fight looks pretty cool and all, but it doesn’t last that long… it’s like having a chance at banging a really hot chick and then getting a case of bad beer dick.
RoboCop is an awesome film that every one needs to see at least once in their lifetime. The film is well done in every way and is a true cinematic masterpiece.
Final Synopsis: RoboCop is the fucking tits… you better go get yourself a copy or suffer the consequences… you’ve been warned.
Points Lost: -1 for an anti-climatic fight between ED-209 and RoboCop.
Bonus Points: +1 for Kurtwood Smith’s awesome performance as Clarence Boddicker, +1 for the extra few seconds of brutality on the extended edition.
Lesson Learned: Dead or alive, you’re going with him.
Burning Question: Would you buy that for a dollar?
